Louisiana just passed legislation which enables state wildlife officials to enforce federal rules that require shrimp fishermen to outfit their otter trawl nets with escape hatches for sea turtles (known as Turtle Excluder Devices or TEDs). The new law officially ends a ban on state enforcement of this important ocean conservation measure–a ban that has been in place since 1987. While this news will be most celebrated by the sea turtles themselves, ocean conservation activists everywhere are cheering this new legislation. And they’re not the only ones…

In light of the state’s action, Seafood Watch has reevaluated its assessment of the Louisiana shrimp fishery and now all U.S. shrimp caught by otter trawl in the Gulf of Mexico and South Atlantic are considered a “Good Alternative” option. This is good news for the Bubba Gumps of the world, and those dedicated to making sustainable food choices and supporting businesses with strong ethics and corporate responsibility practices…ideals we at Annieglass not only support, but implement ourselves.
